biography

Professor Hervé Morvan is the Chief of Future Platforms at Rolls-Royce, an honorary professor at the University of Nottingham and a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society (FRAeS). He joined Rolls-Royce in early 2018 following 5 years at the head of the Institute for Aerospace Technology (IAT) at the University of Nottingham (and 15 years at the University). He and his team provide an internal world-class platforms capability to Rolls-Royce, tasked with exploring advanced and disruptive concepts and supporting future propositions for aviation to the Group. In 2018, that team presented some forward looking eVTOL concepts at the Farnborough International Airshow (FIA18), which attracted significant attention. Since 2019, he has been looking at broader hybrid options, as well as energy and future fuel issues, including for hydrogen in aviation. Since 2019, his team has also supported broader relationships towards sustainability and new aviation models with e.g. Widerøe in Norway to explore a holistic net-zero model for an airline by 2040 or as part of the UK Future Flight programme with Project NAPKIN.

Dr. Tom Verstraete is professor at the Von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics, and visiting professor at the University of Ghent. Previously, he was a visiting professor at Queen Mary University of London after obtaining a Marie-Curie Individual Fellowship. With over 17 years of experience in the design of various turbomachinery components, his interests range from axial/radial compressors/turbines, internal cooling channels to space propulsion inducers, nuclear pumps, to steam turbines diffusers. His current focus is on multidisciplinary shape optimization, conjugate heat transfer and micro gas turbines. He is editorial board member of the International Journal of Turbomachinery, Propulsion and Power and associate editor of the ASME journal of turbomachinery.

“Guillermo Paniagua has pioneered research in transonic turbines and counter-rotating turbines. He demonstrated pulsating trailing edge blowing method to control shock waves and manage the base flow pressure. He invented a new generation of turbines that can operate under high supersonic inlet conditions: supersonic axial, supersonic radial outflow turbines, and bladeless axial turbines. After 18 years at the prestigious von Karman Institute,
he joined Purdue in 2014 and founded the Purdue Experimental Turbine Aerothermal Lab, developing a tri-sonic turbine facility with modular test sections to enable TRL1 to 6. Professor Paniagua’s research is presented in 100 journal articles and182 proceeding papers at leading conferences. Prof. Paniagua holds an MSc in Electro-
Mechanical Engineering from the Escuela Politécnica Superior de Ingeniería, Gijón (Spain), a Research Master from the von Karman Institute, Rhode-St-Genese (Belgium), and a Ph.D. in Engineering from the Universite Libre de Bruxelles (Belgium). Since 2016 he is a Part-time Faculty Research Participant in the ORISE program at the National Energy Technology Laboratory”
